Net Impact Projects and Team 2017-2018

Our teams had the opportunity to hear from various organizations such as Design For America, UC Davis Grad School of Management Big Bang, and the Graduate Net Impact Davis chapter.

Poverty team:

• develop/implement mentorship program that helps students of Grant Union High School in Sacramento, CA overcome obstacles in exploring occupational and educational opportunities after high school
• provide a direct solution to address the cycle of poverty in many low-income families​​

​Food Waste team:

• create centralized online resource and community that provides transparent and accurate information on food help resources such as open pantry times to food recovery etiquette
• reduce food waste
• build local, campus-based food sharing platform

Food Waste team was funded and completed their project.​

Waste team:

• address issue of massively generated waste by creating a smart trash bin that can use AI to capture images of waste and sort into compost, recyclable, or landfill.
• prototype that implements Conventional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Computer Vision algorithms on a Raspberry Pi 3 to correctly identify trash
• intelligent, inexpensive and sustainable waste management across commercial and residential facilities
